Faith Restored started, as it has for many furniture flippers, as a hobby- painting and redoing pieces for my own home. I have always been one of those people that loves to dabble in many things; cake decorating, wood working, laying tile, sewing, Sunday school teaching, and such like. And always, painting. On all kinds of things, even shoes! (not a great outcome). Over the years I have collected ideas on Pinterest of beautiful furniture makeovers and always thought I'd love to try it someday. I finally did and was hooked! I'm in! Trying different techniques, following several artists soaking up all they teach! It has grown from hobby and custom jobs for friends and family to selling pieces myself. Why be a furniture artist? Sure, making a little money is great. But the real joy is in that I love old things and I love beautiful wood. I see character and age that hints at the life the piece has been witness to. The hands that created it. The quality and detail now hidden by the years. Gorgeous wood covered by shellac, scratched, scarred, and often discarded. Each piece provides me a unique opportunity and I imagine how beautiful it could be. Why paint wood instead of staining it? (I get that paint may not be fore everyone) There can be several reasons. First, salvaging pieces that are too damaged to be stained. Second, removing the old finish (to re-stain) from carvings and details can be very difficult. Outside of that, furniture provides an amazing canvas. The intricate details can be highlighted by various mediums in a completely new way when painted. I often aim for the best of both worlds, retaining some of the wood grain while artistically accentuating other details with paint. As God does with us, cleaning away the old, the damage, the ugly often provides a canvas for an artist to bring beauty to life once again.
